How to collect a good blood sample

Have a saliva collection kit instead?
In brief

Warm the collection site first, leave the device in place until the tube stops filling, and register the barcode before you post it.

The device draws a small volume of blood from the surface of your skin — no needle into a vein, and no help needed. Nearly every failed blood sample comes down to one of two things: a collection site that was too cold for blood to flow, or the device lifted away before the tube had finished filling.

1

Drink a glass of water and warm the collection site for a few minutes - a warm shower beforehand is a good way of doing this. Warm skin fills the tube in a fraction of the time cold skin does.

2

Wash and dry your hands, then clean the site with the alcohol wipe and let it air-dry completely. Applying the device to damp skin stops it sealing.

3

Press the device firmly against the skin and activate it. You will feel a short sting, and then nothing.

4

Leave it completely still until the tube stops filling. This takes several minutes and it is the step people get wrong — lifting early is the single most common cause of an under-filled tube.

5

Check the blood has reached the fill line on the tube, cap it, and invert it gently several times so it mixes with the additive already inside. Do not shake it.

6

Register the barcode in your Dante ID account before posting. An unregistered tube cannot be linked to a profile.

If the tube stops short of the fill line, send it anyway rather than opening the device or adding to it — the lab would rather assess a short sample than receive a contaminated one.
